Individual Digital Assessment
Where are you on your own digital maturity journey?
Digital Maturity Index (DMI)
(Over 3000 people have participated.)
Discover your personal digital maturity level in six minutes, as thousands of participants have already done, and identify opportunities for growth from the recommendation in your report.
The Digital Maturity Index (DMI) is an online self-assessment that reveals an individual’s level of digital maturity. Designed by Professor Michael Netzley and Robin Speculand, the DMI gives you a report describing where you are on your digital journey and recommendations for development.
One of the few individual digital assessments in the world, the DMI is designed to:
- Support individuals working in organizations in their own personal development
- Provide organizations with an assessment tool to create a baseline of employees’ current digital level and track improvement
- Enable educators and facilitators to identify participants’ digital maturity before initiating a session
The DMI questions are designed to gauge both individuals’ current knowledge and capabilities pertaining to digital transformation. Key assessment points include the impact on customers, changes in leadership style, adopting agile, becoming data-driven, ecosystems, digital language, and key digital technologies and methodologies.
After completing the assessment, participants immediately receive their report describing which of the three unique stages of digital maturity they are in and recommendations for development.
1. Reacting Stage
Individuals typically find themselves responding to a spark or impetus to understand digital. The spark to which you are reacting often comes from the marketplace, customers, or your organization. This early stage of digital maturing is reactive because people are provoked to act.
2. Embedding Stage
Individuals find themselves in the middle of their digital maturity journey. Their work and life are already affected by digital, or perhaps they want to become more customer-obsessed or participate in digital activities or become more involved in data analytics. They are likely focused on the business implications of digital, which include customer journeys, data collection, artificial intelligence, bureaucracy reduction, and ecosystems.
3. Strategizing Stage
Individuals at this mature stage have imbued the challenges, language, and techniques of digital. They can proactively identify and leverage strategic opportunities, and they recognize a sizable revenue potential. They also appreciate the value of partnering with other organizations using open APIs and building ecosystems that enhance the customer offering. In addition, they constantly track advancements in digital and are ready to adopt them when required.
Individuals have the knowledge but not the skills to participate in digital transformation.

Corporate Customer
Organizations are purchasing the DMI to either assist leaders and employees who want to improve their digital maturity or to pre- and post-assess talent as part of their digital transformation.
For organizations using it for leaders to improve their digital maturity, we recommend that the results from the assessment are shared one-on-one with the participant, reviewing their report and the identifying the actions they need to take to improve.
For organizations using it as a pre-and post-assessment, we also recommend one-on-one reviews of the results. To support your organization in using the DMI, you receive a complementary facilitators guide. The 22-page facilitators guide covers:
- Helpful advice for administering the DMI as either prework or an in-session exercise.
- Useful frameworks and questions for interpreting and facilitating reflection or discussion about the current state of digital maturity.
- Essential details about the DMI reports and what information you might highlight to DMI users or program participants.
- Frequently asked questions and possible responses you might share.
In addition, there is also a complimentary call with Professor Michael Netzley or Robin Speculand, who provide support and answer questions.
